South Sudan's Nubian Giraffes Hold Genetic Surprise Despite War Turmoil
Most people do not think about war when they think about giraffes. But decades of fighting in South Sudan have made it really hard to protect animals there. Scientists had almost no genetic data from that country. That was a big problem because the Nubian giraffe, a rare type of giraffe, lives in those tough areas.
Recently, researchers got DNA from 30 Nubian giraffes in two parks, Boma and Badingilo. When they added this new data to older samples from nearby countries, something interesting showed up. The giraffes from Ethiopia and South Sudan looked genetically different from those in Kenya and Uganda. So there are at least three separate groups of Nubian giraffes across this part of Africa.
The White Nile River runs through the region, and some scientists thought it might block giraffes from mixing. The new study says the opposite. Genes from Kordofan giraffes, a related subspecies, were found on the other side of the river. That means the river is not a full barrier after all. Giraffes are finding ways to cross or move around it.
Even with all the chaos in South Sudan, the Nubian giraffes there still have strong genetic health. Their diversity levels look similar to or even better than giraffes in safer places like Kenya. Signs of inbreeding were low. This is good news, but it is fragile. War, habitat loss, or poaching could change things fast.
What does this mean going forward? The findings suggest these South Sudanese giraffes are a real stronghold for the subspecies. Conservation groups now have a clearer picture of where the genetic hotspots are. Protecting these parks, even during hard times, matters more than ever. The data shows that nature can hang on, but only if people give it a real chance.
