NASA has chosen SpaceX to launch a new space telescope. This telescope is designed to search for near-Earth objects, or NEOs. The mission, called NEO Surveyor, will be launched on a Falcon 9 rocket from Florida. The launch is planned for September 2027. The telescope will operate from a special point in space, called the Earth-sun L-1 Lagrange point, which is about 1. 5 million kilometers from Earth. This point is in the direction of the sun.
The NEO Surveyor will have a 50-centimeter telescope. This telescope will be equipped with infrared detectors. These detectors will help the telescope find NEOs and figure out their orbits and sizes. The mission aims to find two-thirds of the NEOs that are at least 140 meters across in just five years. There is also a goal to find 90% of these objects in 10 to 12 years. This goal was set by Congress.
The launch contract was awarded just after the mission passed a critical design review. This review happened on February 6. The mission can now move to the next phases of assembly and testing. Part of the spacecraft, called the instrument enclosure, is currently undergoing environmental testing at the Johnson Space Center. Later this spring, this part and other sections of the spacecraft will be sent to the Space Dynamics Lab in Utah. There, they will integrate other components and perform more testing.
The search for NEOs is important. Recently, an asteroid named 2024 YR4 grabbed attention. This asteroid was discovered in December. It is estimated to be between 40 and 90 meters across. Initial calculations showed a small but non-zero chance of it hitting Earth in December 2032. Additional observations increased the chance of an impact to 3. 1% by February 18. However, further observations refined the asteroid's orbit. This caused the risk of an impact to fall dramatically. As of February 21, the Center for Near Earth Object Studies at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory calculated only a 0. 36% chance of an impact in December 2032.
The NEO Surveyor mission is part of a broader effort to protect Earth from potential impacts. This mission will help scientists better understand the risks posed by NEOs. It will also provide valuable data for future missions. The mission is a reminder that space exploration is not just about discovering new worlds. It is also about protecting our own.
