In a big move for Springfield Local Schools, teachers have decided to go their own way. The Springfield Federation of Teaching Professionals (SFTP) is now an independent union. This change happened after a vote where every single teacher agreed to break away from the Ohio Education Association. The State Employment Relations Board (SERB) gave the green light on October 16.
Why did they do this? Teachers wanted to focus on what's best for their schools and students. They believe being independent will let them make quicker, more relevant decisions. This way, they can address the specific needs of their community without any outside interference.
Tina Hartong, the president of SFTP, said this wasn't a decision made overnight. It took years of talking and planning. The goal? To create a union that's strong, responsive, and truly represents the teachers and students of Springfield.
Being independent also means teachers can work more closely with the school district and the community. Tricia Williams, the vice president of SFTP, said this change will help them advocate for students better. It's all about building a stronger partnership with the district and the people of Springfield.
This shift is a big deal. It shows that teachers are serious about taking control of their future. They want to make sure their voices are heard and their needs are met. It's a bold step, but one they believe will lead to better learning conditions for students.
