Storms Leave Tornado‑Like Damage Across Northern Illinois
Illinois, USASat Apr 04 2026
The National Weather Service has confirmed that a weak tornado, rated EF‑1, struck parts of Lee County last Thursday night. A survey team was dispatched to inspect the damage and is still checking sites in nearby Ogle County. Meteorologist Lee Carlaw reported that crews were on the move early Friday to determine whether the destruction was caused by tornadoes or other severe weather.
The evening’s storms were part of a larger threat that covered much of northern Illinois, including towns such as DeKalb, Sterling, Dixon, Rock Falls and Princeton. Forecasts had warned of fast‑moving storms that could spawn tornadoes or produce damaging winds, and the region was given an Enhanced Risk rating. The thunderstorms produced strong gusts, a few small hailstones and heavy rain in short bursts.
Reported damage varied from a ruined barn and fallen power lines on Mound Hill Road near Pilgrim Road, to structural harm along State Route 26 south of Woosung. In Ogle County, trees and outbuildings were knocked down near West Edgewood Road and South Ridge Road. A grain elevator on railroad tracks south of Davis Junction also suffered damage. The National Weather Service logged these incidents between 6:10 and 6:30 p. m. Thursday.
Officials in Carroll County also noted tree damage, while Dixon Police Chief Ryan Bivins urged residents to watch for downed power lines after the storm. Bivins confirmed that a tornado had been seen north and west of Dixon, but the city limits reported no major damage. He highlighted that sirens were activated early and that authorities are continuing to assess the situation.
The survey teams will keep working through the weekend, checking for additional damage and ensuring that all affected areas are safe. Residents are advised to stay alert for any lingering hazards such as exposed wires or weakened structures.
