Stormy Tuesday ahead for southeast Michigan
metro Detroit, southeast Michigan, USAWed May 20 2026
Weather experts say metro Detroit should brace for a wild Tuesday. Early morning rain swept through Wayne County, and now stronger storms are brewing for the afternoon. Doppler radar picked up intense thunderstorms moving from Dixboro toward Ypsilacor around 9 AM, bringing heavy rain to Detroit by 9:45 AM. The National Weather Service warns that these storms could bring hail, strong winds, and even isolated tornadoes, especially in areas southeast of a line from Howell to Sandusky.
The worst of the storms might hit between 3 PM and 9 PM across a long list of counties. Places like Oakland, Macomb, and Washtenaw could see wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail the size of a quarter, and the rare chance of a twister. The storms won’t linger—they’ll race through at about 40 to 45 mph. Along with the storms, temperatures will climb to near 88 degrees in Detroit by mid-afternoon. Humidity will drop slightly during the heat of the day but could rise to 81% by nighttime.
Meteorologists point to warm, muggy conditions as the main reason behind these severe storms. The National Weather Service predicts the strongest ones could cause damage with flying debris, large hail, and a slim risk of tornadoes. But relief is on the way: a cold front is expected to push through Tuesday night, bringing drier and cooler air for Wednesday and Thursday.
After a stormy Monday that knocked down trees and damaged roofs across the state, Tuesday’s weather could bring even more chaos. The weekend might stay mostly dry until Friday, when another round of rain could arrive late in the day.
