In a big move for women's football, Netflix has secured exclusive U. S. broadcast rights for the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cups. This deal is significant because it's the first time Netflix will stream an entire sporting event. FIFA sees this as a chance to boost the game’s popularity worldwide.
Under the agreement, Netflix will broadcast all matches live and offer in-depth coverage, including pre- and post-match analysis, in both English and Spanish. The 2027 tournament will be held in Brazil, while the host for 2031 is yet to be decided.
This isn't Netflix's first dive into live sports. They've already planned to stream NFL games on Christmas Day and have secured rights to air WWE's Monday Night Raw starting in 2025. Netflix is also producing exclusive documentaries about the players and the growth of women's football.
Netflix's content officer, Bela Bajaria, expressed excitement about the deal, noting the growing global interest in women's sports. FIFA’s president, Gianni Infantino, called it a historic step for women’s football.
Netflix has previously aired soccer-related content like documentaries on the U. S. Women’s World Cup team, Neymar, and Beckham. They also have upcoming films about Vinícius Júnior and José Mourinho.
