Strengthening Bonds, Healing Together

Tehran, IranTue Aug 11 2026

When addiction takes a toll on relationships, it's not just the individuals who suffer. Couples struggling with addiction often find themselves disconnected and struggling to maintain intimacy. But what if there was a way to heal and strengthen these bonds? A recent study explored the effectiveness of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) in improving marital intimacy and functioning among Iranian couples affected by addiction.

EFCT is a type of therapy that focuses on strengthening emotional connections and improving communication between partners. By teaching couples how to respond to each other's emotions and needs, EFCT aims to create a more secure and loving relationship. In this study, 20 couples were randomly assigned to either an experimental group or a control group. The experimental group received eight sessions of EFCT, while the control group received no intervention.

The results were promising. Couples who received EFCT showed significant improvements in marital intimacy and functioning compared to the control group. By strengthening emotional bonds and improving communication, EFCT helped couples build a stronger and more loving relationship. This is especially important for couples struggling with addiction, as a healthy relationship can provide a sense of security and support.

So, how can EFCT be used to help couples affected by addiction? By integrating EFCT into addiction treatment and family counseling services, couples can receive the support and guidance they need to build a stronger and healthier relationship. This can lead to improved psychological well-being, stronger family functioning, and a more fulfilling life for all involved.
