Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan won the recent election with a huge 97% of the vote. She celebrated in Dodoma, saying Tanzanians chose a woman leader. She called for unity and promised to keep the country peaceful.
But not everyone is happy. Many think the election wasn't fair. Two main opponents were stopped from running. Only small party candidates were left. People protested in big cities, and the military had to step in. The internet was even shut off sometimes.
The protests spread, and universities had to delay reopening. Streets were tense, with security checks everywhere. Reports say at least 10 people died, but the government hasn't given numbers.
The U. N. and other countries are worried. They say there are reports of many deaths and injuries. Opposition leaders like Tundu Lissu are in jail. Another, Luhaga Mpina, was barred from running.
Hassan became president in 2021 after her predecessor died. She's from the CCM party, which has ruled Tanzania since independence. The party is known for stability but also for limiting opposition.
Critics say Hassan is more authoritarian than past leaders. She's cracked down on opponents and free speech. Rights groups report disappearances and arrests. Still, CCM has strong support, especially in rural areas.
