Tech Test: When Age Meets AI in a Senate Battle

A debate about artificial intelligence tools has exposed a deeper question in Massachusetts politics. Should voters choose experience or freshness? Seth Moulton is only 47. His opponent would be 86 by the end of another term. That age gap is now at the center of one of the most watched primary races heading into Tuesday.

When reporters asked whether Ed Markey uses platforms like Claude or ChatGPT, the answer was telling. Markey said he relies on whatever features come built into his iPhone or iPad. He admitted he does not know which companies power those features. For Arsen Bagdassarian, an 18-year-old Northeastern University student backing Moulton, that moment confirmed everything. He called it eye-opening. Bagdassarian thinks artificial intelligence is a huge deal. He believes the country needs leaders who actually understand what they might be regulating.

Moulton's campaign has made this a generational test. He argues that Markey entered Congress 50 years ago. The world has changed dramatically since then. Rising housing costs, student debt, and AI are reshaping young people's lives. Some Democratic voters clearly want a change. They feel older politicians cannot fully grasp a world transformed beyond recognition.

But Markey also has strong youth backing. The High School Democrats of America and the College Democrats of America both endorsed him. So did Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Matt Kelly runs the UMass Lowell College Democrats. He admits Markey's AI answer was not great. However, Kelly says that matters less to him than understanding how to govern technology. He points out that a younger face does not automatically mean younger ideas.

Many Markey supporters flip the age argument on its head. They say a long career creates a clear record to evaluate. Milan van Dam leads the High School Democrats nationally. At 17, she says leadership is about ideas and consistency, not just a number on Wikipedia. Abby Shadden is 21 and studies at Emmanuel College. She notes Markey co-authored the Green New Deal. He backed Medicare for All long before it became trendy. She says people assume younger candidates are automatically more progressive, but that simply is not always true.
