China and Japan are at it again, this time over some tiny islands in the East China Sea. Both countries claim the islands, which China calls Diaoyu and Japan calls Senkaku. China has sent its Coast Guard to patrol the waters around these uninhabited islands, which Japan currently controls. This latest escalation comes after Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made some strong comments about Taiwan. She said that if China were to attack Taiwan, Japan might step in militarily. This is a big deal because Japan usually avoids talking about Taiwan in this way. China was not happy about this. They warned their citizens not to travel to Japan, saying there are serious safety risks. They didn't provide any evidence, but this could hurt Japan's tourism industry. Almost seven million Chinese tourists visited Japan last year, making up a big chunk of international visitors. China's Foreign Ministry demanded that Takaichi take back her remarks. Some Chinese diplomats even made threats on social media. One even said he wanted to cut off Takaichi's "filthy head, " though he later deleted the post. This isn't the first time China has used tourism as a weapon in a diplomatic fight. They've done it before with the U. S. , Australia, and South Korea. It's a way for them to put pressure on other countries without using military force. Japan has asked China to take "appropriate measures, " but it's not clear what that means. For now, the situation remains tense, and it's hard to say what will happen next.
