On Saturday, a series of tornadoes wreaked havoc in Texas and Mississippi, leaving two people dead and six others injured. In Texas, one person died in the Liverpool area, near Houston, and four more were injured. Brazoria County officials reported around 10 damaged homes, but the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. Madison Polston, a spokesperson for the county, stated that there were multiple tornado touchdowns between Liverpool, Hillcrest Village, and Alvin.
In Mississippi, another person lost their life in Adams County, and two more were injured in Franklin County. According to the National Weather Service, two tornadoes hit near Bude and Brandon, causing significant damage to buildings. Josh Lichter, a meteorologist, warned that the situation could worsen over the evening and night as the storms moved east.
Texas's Houston area saw at least six tornadoes, though the actual number could be higher. Both tornadoes and straight-line winds caused destruction, with mobile homes in Katy and Porter Heights suffering major damage. Fire stations in these areas also bore the brunt, with doors blown in by the force of the winds.
The severe weather also led to significant delays at Houston's main airports, Bush Intercontinental and Hobby. In Mississippi, power outages affected around 71, 000 utility customers, a number expected to rise. First responders were focused on ensuring everyone's safety and accounting for all individuals. The state's Emergency Management Agency anticipated more detailed damage assessments to start in the early morning.
