Texas is looking for land to help the incoming Trump administration with its deportation plans. Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham said her office is spotting suitable properties across the state's 13 million acres. The project is named after Houston girl Jocelyn Nungaray, who was sadly killed by two men in the country illegally. Jocelyn's mom and grandma joined Buckingham to launch the project on a ranch where a border wall is being built. The aim is to ensure other families don't face what Jocelyn's family did.
Starr County, though small, has lots of open land. It also has hills, unlike its flat neighboring counties. Texas just bought a big chunk of land here. Buckingham offered this land to Trump for a deportation facility. She said it could handle the biggest deportation of violent criminals ever.
Business as usual isn’t quite the reality in the Valley. There's already a processing center in McAllen called "la hielera" or "icebox" due to its cold temperatures. It’s been renovated and a new one opened in Donna. But unlike these, a Starr County facility would ship migrants out of the country. This story is still unfolding. Stay tuned for updates.
