After a 20-year break, Chi-Chi's Mexican restaurants are set to reopen in 2025. This resurrection is thanks to a deal between Michael McDermott, the son of Chi-Chi's founder Marno McDermott, and Hormel Foods, who owns the Chi-Chi's trademarks. Michael, who has experience with Kona Grill and Rojo Mexican Grill, wants to bring back the classic Chi-Chi’s vibe with a modern twist. Chi-Chi's once had over 200 locations, including several in Michigan, before shutting down in 2004 after facing numerous ownership changes. The story of Chi-Chi's began in 1975 when Marno McDermott and former Green Bay Packers player Max McGee started the chain. Despite its closure, the brand's products like salsas and tortillas have remained popular in grocery stores. As Chi-Chi’s prepares for its comeback, the question on everyone’s lips is: Will Michigan get another chance to enjoy this iconic Mexican dining experience?
