As the newly appointed interim police commissioner of New York City, Thomas Donlon's tenure got off to a rocky start when federal authorities executed a search warrant at his home. The warrant, executed on September 20th, targeted documents from Donlon's previous positions, which were unrelated to his work with the NYPD. In a statement, Donlon claimed the documents were approximately 20 years old and had no connection to his current role.
The search warrant has raised questions about what prompted the investigation, which appears to be unrelated to the corruption probes currently engulfing City Hall. The FBI in New York has chosen not to comment on the matter, leaving many wondering what secrets the documents might hold.
Just a week prior, Donlon had taken over as interim commissioner, replacing Edward Caban who had resigned amid a federal investigation into his brother and enforcement around nightclubs in New York City. The NYPD has stated that the search warrant is not an NYPD matter and will not be commenting on it.
