In a surprising turn of events, three cybersecurity professionals from the United States are accused of secretly operating a ransomware scheme. This group allegedly worked with the infamous hacking collective ALPHV BlackCat to lock down company networks and demand large sums of cryptocurrency as ransom. The indictment, filed in a Miami federal court, names Ryan Goldberg and Kevin Martin as two of the accused, while the third remains unidentified.
The accused individuals were not just any cybersecurity experts; they were part of well-known firms. Kevin Martin was once an employee of DigitalMint, a company that specializes in cybercrime and ransomware incident response. Ryan Goldberg held a position as an incident response manager at Sygnia, another prominent cybersecurity firm. Both companies have distanced themselves from the alleged actions of their former employees, stating that these activities were conducted outside the scope of their employment.
DigitalMint confirmed that one of its former employees was indicted for participating in ransomware operations. The company emphasized that it had no knowledge of these activities and has been cooperating with the investigation. Sygnia, on the other hand, stated that Goldberg no longer works for them and that the firm is not the target of the investigation.
The indictment did not specify which companies were affected by the ransomware attacks, only mentioning that they were based in various states including California, Florida, Virginia, and Maryland. The accused individuals allegedly targeted multiple industries, aiming to extort millions of dollars in cryptocurrency.
Ryan Goldberg has been detained ahead of his trial, while Kevin Martin has pleaded not guilty. A lawyer for Martin declined to comment, and a lawyer listed for Goldberg did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The case raises serious questions about the integrity of some cybersecurity professionals and the potential for insider threats within the industry.
