In the halls of Congress, a heated argument is brewing. It's all about a plan to make the FBI more transparent. Rep. Elise Stefanik, a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump, wants a rule that would force the FBI to tell Congress when they start investigating political candidates. She believes this is crucial to prevent any unfair targeting of candidates, especially after the controversial Russia probe during the 2016 election.
Stefanik has been pushing hard to include this rule in a major defense bill that Congress must pass. However, the leaders in Congress have decided to leave it out. This has made Stefanik very upset. She has even threatened to vote against the defense bill for the first time ever. She claims that the bill won't pass unless her rule is included.
But House Speaker Mike Johnson says Stefanik's claims are not true. He says he had nothing to do with leaving out her rule. Johnson says he supports the idea but that other leaders in Congress didn't agree with it. He has offered to help Stefanik, but she is not backing down. She has even shared a text message from Johnson that she says proves he is not being honest.
This argument is just one of many problems Johnson is facing. The Republican Party in the House of Representatives is having a lot of internal fights. Many members are not happy with Johnson's leadership. Some are even trying to push their own agenda, which is making it hard for Johnson to keep control.
Stefanik and Johnson used to work well together. They both supported Trump and worked on his defense team during his first impeachment trial. But lately, their relationship has become more tense. This is partly because the White House decided not to nominate Stefanik for a big job as ambassador to the United Nations. Now, Stefanik is running for governor of New York and has a lot of support from Trump's former advisers.
