Mayor Eric Adams, the second African-American to lead New York City, has been accused of accepting illegal campaign contributions and bribes from foreign sources. The 57-page federal indictment charges him with bribery, wire fraud, and accepting improper campaign contributions. If convicted, Adams could face significant prison time.
The investigation began nearly a year ago, when federal agents raided the Brooklyn home of Adams' chief fundraiser, Brianna Suggs. Since then, agents have seized the mayor's phones and iPad, and searched the residences of several of his closest confidants. The mayor's inner circle has been rocked by the scandal, with several key officials resigning or announcing their departures.
Adams, a former police officer, has maintained that he has always followed the rules and has no knowledge of any wrongdoing within his administration. However, prosecutors allege that he received free and discounted flight upgrades valued at over $100,000, as well as campaign contributions from straw donors.
The indictment also accuses Adams of intervening in New York City Fire Department procedures to benefit foreign interests. In one instance, he allegedly pressured fire inspectors to approve the opening of a Turkish consulate building despite safety concerns, in exchange for personal favors.
The alleged conduct predates Adams' time as mayor and dates back to his time as Brooklyn Borough President. The indictment includes photos of fancy hotel rooms and other benefits the mayor allegedly took.
