Louisiana's education officials are fighting back against a court ruling that says posting the Ten Commandments in classrooms is unconstitutional. They want the court to pause a judge's order while they appeal. Here's what happened: A federal judge in Baton Rouge declared the law, which demands schools hang up the Ten Commandments, as illegal. He ordered the state to tell all 72 school boards about his decision. But Louisiana says the judge went too far because only five school boards are part of the lawsuit. The state wants to appeal the whole ruling but, for now, are focusing on stopping that notification order. The law was passed this year by the Republican-dominated legislature and signed into law by Governor Jeff Landry. The judge said the law has a clear religious purpose and rejected the idea that the Ten Commandments have historic importance to US law, as claimed by state officials. The Attorney General disagrees with the judge's finding.
