Picture this: the Super Bowl, the biggest night in sports, being interrupted by a bizarre ad. Kanye West, superstar musician and controversial figure, manages to get a 30-second spot during the game on a few local Fox stations.
The ad is simple and self-deprecating, filmed on an iPhone. On East Coast the ad aired, viewers were left flipping over to more of the big game.
East Coast viewers weren’t watching their screens carefully enough - not yet. The ad aired and then viewers, especially in Los Angeles, might have experienced severe whiplash.
The after effects were jolting: Right after the ad aired. You would be surprised to know what happened then.
Just the day before, Yeezy. com was online with a variety of non-branded clothes.
It was typical fare, nothing eye-raising, but then the unthinkable happened. Kanye West changed the whole purpose of the landing page but it was worse. Especially with the Super Bowl event, universal spotlight. The website was updated seemingly without warning.
It just happened so fast.
The web page now featured a single item: a $20 white t-shirt with a swastika printed on it. Shocking, but true.
This change caused major outrage, and clearly, nobody saw it coming. Sure, it's easy to say that this was a huge mistake but many might consider it is purposefully done. Think about the timing.
The football game was airing. The ad spot, that wasn’t flagged, for just a few local stations. The ad was sent for sale and approval. It's interesting that this went through.
This sounds like another big headline. Kanye West has stirred up controversies before. He's angered many with his words and actions and also shown support for Nazism. This is not new to him. His social media is full of it. But time and time again he pushes the boundaries.
At the end of the day, Fox stations in LA and other local markets, and other smaller stations, the broadcast went ahead.
It was a big deal for a few important reasons:
Economy and upsetting are the words used today. First, shopify is in hot water. Maybe it was a mistake.
Shopping for the tshirt was easy thanks to Shopify the website host. The $20 is a payment to shopify for a shirt with a symbol on it.
It was a low-budget. It was made without a thought to the consequences.
Third, the Super Bowl ad becoming a huge talking point continuing the conversation started by the ad and the t-shirt.
Let’s not overlook what the swastika represents. Not everything was directly said or straight because of use.
This is one of the hardest symbols to carry with honor. Many lives were lost because of this symbol. Just saying the word swastika is enough to anger many.
As a result, Shopify now has a controversial advertisement for a $20 t-shirt. This didn’t need to happen.
After the controversy, some would say that the hip-hop star pulled the shirt from the store.
Now here is the big question, was this some kind of advertising ploy? Is Kanye West fighting with other brands?
Mostlikely this was unintended.
