Tiny Nuclear Reactors Could Change Everything - Here's the Plan
The U.S. Army is about to become a major player in nuclear energy. In August, officials revealed plans to spend up to 2.2 billion dollars building microreactors at military bases across the country. This move comes after President Trump signed an executive order putting the Army in charge of military nuclear projects. The goal? Get a working reactor running at a U.S. military base by the end of September 2028.
So what exactly are these microreactors? Think of them as the little cousins of traditional nuclear power plants. A standard reactor can produce around 900 megawatts of electricity. SMRs, or small modular reactors, max out at 300 megawatts per unit. Microreactors go even smaller, putting out between 1 and 20 megawatts of heat energy. The big advantage here is size. These compact reactors can fit on trucks, boats, or planes. That means they can bring clean power to remote areas far away from the main electrical grid.
Companies building these reactors plan to make them in factories first, then ship them wherever needed. This should cut costs and speed up production significantly. The designs are meant to be simple so operators do not need special training to manage them. Safety features will prevent overheating and meltdowns. Another cool feature? These reactors can run for up to 10 years without needing new fuel. When the old one is used up, workers can just swap it out with a fresh unit.
Texas company Aalo hit a major milestone recently. Their Critical Test Reactor reached criticality, which means it can sustain a nuclear chain reaction on its own. Company leaders say they went from groundbreaking to this point in under eight months. Aalo wants to use their reactors to power artificial intelligence data centers.
The Department of Energy backs multiple reactor projects under this push for nuclear revival. Trump has expressed support for all types of nuclear technology, from big plants to tiny microreactors. The administration wants U.S. nuclear power output to quadruple by 2050. With the Army driving development and private companies racing to build, America is placing a huge bet on this new generation of small nuclear machines.
