Tooley Oil Exits Retail Business After 50 Years

Tooley Oil is pulling out of its familiar retail side. The company has sold all 12 of its convenience stores and seven car wash spots in the Sacramento area. An undisclosed buyer has taken over these locations. The move was announced through a press release from Matrix Capital Markets Group, an investment bank based in Richmond, Virginia.

This marks the end of nearly half a century in the same industry. Tooley Oil began in 1978 when founder Mick Tooley bought eight unbranded stores from Tosco. Over the decades the family expanded into wholesale fuel distribution, partnering with Shell in the 1990s. His sons David and Michael helped speed up growth during that era. Many former store names were changed to Mixx Market for the shops and CleanMixx for the car washes.

President Mick Tooley called the decision bittersweet but proud. He thanked his dedicated staff for making the business successful. The Matrix Capital team was praised for guiding the sale smoothly. Tooley noted that this exit closes an important chapter for the family, though they remain optimistic about future growth in their wholesale operations. Other regional players are also moving away from retail, including Monfort Companies which recently sold its last 20 stores.
