Toyota's dedication to hybrid vehicles has long been hailed as an eco-friendly triumph, but a recent International Council of Clean Transportation (ICCT) study might make you think twice about patting the Japanese automaker on the back.
The ICCT report uncovers some unsettling facts about hybrids' life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly in relation to battery electric vehicles (BEVs): BEV sedans and SUVs have significantly lower life-cycle GHG emissions than their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts. In fact, hybrid SUVs emit nearly 5 times more life-cycle GHGs than a comparable BEV SUV powered by renewable energy.
These findings shed new light on the long-term environmental impact of Toyota's hybrid-centric strategy.
