Tracking Migrant Kids: ICE's New Call Center Plan

ICE, the U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is setting up a new call center. This center will have a special team. Their job? To find unaccompanied migrant children. They plan to work with local police to get information. The goal? To track down these kids and possibly deport them. This isn't new. The Trump administration has been trying to find and deport unaccompanied children since February. These are kids who crossed the border alone. No parents, no guardians. The administration wants to find them and send them back. But how? The call center will be open all day and night. It's expected to handle thousands of calls daily. Local police will share information with federal authorities. This includes where these kids are. The center will be in Nashville. Why Nashville? Maybe because CoreCivic, a company that runs detention centers, is based there. The administration has been working hard to increase immigration enforcement. They've expanded a program called 287(g). This program lets state and local police work with federal authorities. More than 1, 100 agencies are now part of this program. That's a big increase from before Trump took office. But not everyone is happy about this. Critics say these partnerships can make immigrant communities afraid. They might not report crimes if they think the police will turn them in.
