Wednesday afternoon, a tragic incident unfolded at a small religious school in Northern California. Two students were injured when a gunman opened fire at the Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists in Palermo. The gunman was found dead near the playground, having apparently taken their own life. The children were rushed to nearby hospitals, but their conditions remain unknown. Palermo, a small town with about 5, 500 residents, is located roughly 65 miles north of Sacramento. The shooting is one of many recent school shootings in the U. S. , including those in Newtown, Parkland, and Uvalde. These events have sparked intense debates about gun control but have not led to significant changes in national gun laws. In 2020 and 2021, firearms were the leading cause of death among children, according to KFF, a health care research nonprofit. Assemblyman James Gallagher, whose district includes Palermo, expressed his condolences. "My heart is breaking for everyone impacted by this tragedy. As a community, we’ll all be hugging our loved ones closer today as we pray for the victims and try to make sense of something so senseless. " Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea stated that the shooter did not appear to be connected to the school, and the motive remains unclear. Authorities are working to identify the gunman. The school, which has been operating since 1965, is situated near ranchland where cattle graze. After the shooting, students were quickly evacuated and reunited with their families at the Oroville Church of the Nazarene. The scene was secured, with the shooter's body covered by a blue tarp.
