President-elect Donald Trump seems to be aligning himself with tech industry leaders like Elon Musk in a heated debate over the use of H-1B visas. These visas allow skilled foreign workers to come to the U. S. , and they've become a hot topic among Trump's supporters.
In a recent interview with the New York Post, Trump expressed support for these visas. “I’ve always liked the visas, I have always been in favor of the visas. That’s why we have them, ” he said. This is a shift from his past criticisms of the H-1B visa program, which he once called “very bad” and “unfair” for American workers.
During his first term as president, Trump introduced the “Hire American” policy to ensure these visas went to the highest-paid or most-skilled applicants. He even admitted to using these visas in his own businesses.
Trump’s stance on immigration, particularly focusing on illegal immigrants, has been a key part of his presidential campaign. However, his supporters are now divided over the tech industry's use of foreign workers. Some hardline supporters argue that this goes against Trump’s “America First” vision.
The tech industry often uses H-1B visas to fill roles that are hard to fill with U. S. citizens. Critics, however, believe these visas take jobs away from Americans. Some conservatives even call for the program to be eliminated.
It's unclear whether Trump will make changes to the H-1B visa program once he takes office.
