Trick-or-treating at the White House is not what it used to be. President Trump has his own way of doing things, and this year was no different. Instead of handing out candy like other presidents, he placed it on top of the kids' costumes. It happened twice. First, in 2019, to a child dressed as a Minion. The kid stood there, confused, as Trump put the candy on the costume. Melania, standing next to him, seemed to accept it as just another one of his unusual traditions. This year, the same thing happened to a child dressed as DJ Marshmello. The kid looked just as puzzled as the first one. It's like Trump has his own rulebook for everything, including Halloween.
The grand entrance was just as unusual. Trump and Melania walked in to the tune of Michael Jackson's "Thriller. " It was a strange choice for a kids' event, but it fit the night's theme. The song added a spooky touch, but it also made the whole scene feel like a scene from a horror movie. It was a night full of surprises, and not the good kind.
Trump's trick-or-treat style is a reflection of his presidency. He does things his own way, even if it means breaking norms. It's not the first time he's done something like this, and it probably won't be the last. But for the kids who came to the White House expecting a normal trick-or-treat experience, it was a night they won't forget. For better or worse, Trump has a way of making an impression.
