UAE Sees First Global Bank Offer Bitcoin and Ether Trading

Standard Chartered has just made waves in finance. The bank is now letting big institutional players trade Bitcoin and Ether directly in the United Arab Emirates. This move marks a historic moment – it's the first time a globally recognized systemically important bank has opened up such a service in the UAE. Eligible clients can buy and sell these digital assets through the bank's electronic trading platform located in the Dubai International Financial Centre.

The deal isn't just about opening doors though. It's built on a solid foundation of regulation and infrastructure. The Dubai Financial Services Authority has set clear rules for crypto-related activities, requiring proper authorization for any firm handling these tokens. Standard Chartered's platform integrates smoothly with existing foreign-exchange systems, making it feel familiar to traders who already know the ropes. Clients can even pick which custodian handles their positions, whether that's the bank itself or a separate provider. Plus, in April 2025 they teamed up with OKX to create a collateral program where institutional clients could use cryptocurrencies as off-exchange collateral.

This isn't a standalone story either. The bank had already started similar programs elsewhere. Back in July 2025, they rolled out spot trading for Bitcoin and Ether in the UK, becoming the first global systemically important bank to do so there. Earlier in 2024, they secured a license to handle digital assets locally, launching custody services for Bitcoin and Ethereum. Their UAE push builds on this momentum, showing how quickly the region is embracing digital currency markets.
