Uganda's Brave Hearts Boosts Kids' Heart Surgery

In Uganda about sixteen thousand babies are born each year with a heart defect. Most of them cannot get surgery because money and specialists are scarce. Long waiting lists keep families anxious.

A program called Brave Hearts started on December seventh twenty twenty three at the Uganda Heart Institute. It began as a Christmas party for kids and grew into a yearly event that celebrates every surgery milestone. Doctors, families, government officials and international partners all meet there.

A big change moved the job of picking patients from the surgeons to the heart doctors. That shift cut delays and helped the team work smoother. More government money and partner help followed.

After the second celebration the hospital now does eight to twelve open heart operations and about eight closed heart procedures each month. The waiting list is tracked better, staff feel more motivated and families say they get more emotional support. Recognizing small wins builds trust and keeps the service growing.
