Volodymyr Zelensky, the leader of Ukraine, recently visited the White House. He wanted to get some powerful Tomahawk missiles from the U. S. These missiles can hit targets very far away. Zelensky thought they could help Ukraine fight back against Russia.
But Donald Trump, the U. S. President, said no. He thinks giving Ukraine these missiles could make the war even worse. The war started when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Trump wants both sides to stop fighting and make peace.
The meeting between Zelensky and Trump was not easy. Trump told Zelensky about a long phone call he had with Russia's President, Vladimir Putin. Trump wants the war to end now. He thinks both Ukraine and Russia should keep the land they have and stop fighting.
Trump said the war is causing too many deaths and costing too much money. He wants both sides to claim victory and go home. Trump and Putin might meet soon to talk about ending the war.
Zelensky wanted the missiles to attack Russian oil and energy targets. These targets help fund Russia's military. But Trump said the U. S. needs these missiles for its own defense. He left the door open for sending them to Ukraine later if the war doesn't end soon.
Putin also told Trump not to give Ukraine the missiles. He said it would make relations between Russia and the U. S. even worse.
