Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has voiced confidence that Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, will face justice. Mangione is accused of shooting Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel on December 4. His attorney has stated that Mangione intends to plead not guilty, claiming there is no evidence linking him to the crime.
Bragg's office is currently focusing on bringing Mangione to New York for trial. Additionally, Mangione faces charges for possession of a forged instrument and several counts of possessing a weapon. The DA has mentioned that more charges could be added as the investigation unfolds. Bragg emphasized that the nature of the crime is alarming and has garnered significant public attention.
The New York Police Department has provided forensic evidence linking Mangione to the crime. Fingerprints from the scene and shell casings from the weapon match Mangione, who is accused of using a 3D-printed handgun. The DA's office has been actively combating the use of so-called ghost guns, which are increasingly being used by younger individuals.
Bragg explained that the charge of second-degree murder was chosen because it allows for a quicker trial process than first-degree murder, which has specific circumstances. Second-degree murder in New York is punishable by 25 years to life.
Bragg's handling of high-profile cases, including the conviction of former President Donald Trump and the acquittal of Marine veteran Daniel Penny, has placed him in the spotlight again. He expressed dismay at the public support for Mangione, emphasizing that celebrating murder is unacceptable.
The murder of Thompson sparked online outrage against the health insurance industry and some people have even praised the suspect. Bragg reiterated that such celebrations are abhorrent and beyond comprehension, especially from the perspective of families who have lost loved ones to violence.
