Unlocking the Secrets of Urban Forests

China National Botanical GardenWed Aug 12 2026

Urban forests are home to a diverse array of plant species, each with its unique characteristics and strategies for survival. In a recent study, researchers explored how different factors influence the way plants conserve nutrients in their leaves. They found that the way plants acquire and conserve resources is closely linked to their ability to resorb nutrients from their leaves.

The researchers collected data from 154 woody species in a Chinese botanical garden, looking at factors such as leaf shape, size, and chemical composition. They also examined the types of mycorrhizal associations each plant had, as these can affect how plants acquire nutrients from the soil. The study revealed that plants with certain types of mycorrhizal associations tend to adopt more conservative strategies for nutrient resorption, while others are more acquisitive.

The researchers also discovered that the way plants resorb nutrients is influenced by their evolutionary history. Plants that are more closely related tend to have similar strategies for nutrient resorption, suggesting that this trait has been conserved over time. This finding has important implications for our understanding of how plants adapt to their environments and how we can better manage urban forests to promote healthy plant growth.
