The United States has taken a bold step by imposing sanctions on Colombian President Gustavo Petro, his family, and Interior Minister Armando Benedetti. This move is seen as a major escalation in the ongoing tension between Petro, a left-wing leader, and US President Donald Trump, who leans right.
The US Treasury Department accused Petro of not doing enough to control Colombia's cocaine production and of protecting criminal groups. They pointed to Petro's "Total Peace" plan, which aims to negotiate with armed rebels and criminal organizations to end Colombia's long-standing internal conflict. The Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, claimed that cocaine production in Colombia has surged since Petro took office, flooding the US with drugs.
Petro quickly responded on social media, stating that the sanctions were the result of long-standing threats from Republicans, including Senator Bernie Moreno. He argued that Colombia has been effectively fighting drug trafficking for decades and plans to challenge the sanctions in US courts. Petro also vowed not to back down, stating, "Not one step back and never on my knees. "
This is not the first time a world leader has been personally sanctioned by the US. Other examples include Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, Petro's sanctions come as he nears the end of his presidency, which is set to conclude in 2026.
The feud between Petro and Trump began shortly after Trump's return to the White House. Trump's mass deportation of undocumented immigrants sparked outrage from Petro, who threatened not to accept two deportation flights. Trump responded by threatening tariffs, and Petro backed down. Since then, the two leaders have clashed over various issues, including immigration, human rights, and drug trafficking.
Colombia remains the world's largest source of coca, the plant used to make cocaine. Last year, the United Nations reported a 53 percent increase in cocaine production in Colombia compared to 2022. Trump has been using threats of elevated tariffs and military action to pressure countries, including Colombia, to combat drug smuggling.
Since September, Trump has carried out missile strikes on vessels in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, targeting drug traffickers. However, Petro argues that these strikes amount to extrajudicial killings, citing cases like that of fisherman Alejandro Carranza, who reportedly died in one of the strikes. At least 34 people have been killed in these bombings, some of them Colombian.
Petro has been vocal about his opposition to these actions, even taking his message to the United Nations. He criticized the Trump administration's actions, stating that the "violent war on drugs was a failure" and that he had replaced it with an effective anti-trafficking policy. Petro also rallied with pro-Palestinian protesters in New York City, which led to the Trump administration revoking his visa.
Relations between the two leaders have continued to deteriorate. Trump recently announced that he would end all aid to Colombia, the largest recipient of US funds in South America. In fiscal year 2023 alone, Colombia received more than $743 million in US aid. Trump also warned that the US could take a more active role in Colombia if Petro does not do more to stem the cocaine trade.
Petro has threatened to sue Trump for slander, as the US leader has called him a "drug dealer, " "thug, " and "bad guy, " among other things. The spat between the two presidents has left their countries' diplomatic relations frayed, with Colombia recently recalling its ambassador from Washington, DC.
The sanctions freeze all property Petro, his family, and Interior Minister Benedetti may have in the US. They also bar US-based entities from doing business with the sanctioned parties. Benedetti framed the sanctions as a form of retribution for standing up for Petro.
