Vaping Rules in Crisis: A Call to Protect Kids
Washington DC, USAThu May 21 2026
A U. S. senator has asked the health secretary to stand against new, looser rules on flavored vaping products. The senator argues that these changes favour large tobacco firms and risk turning more children into nicotine users.
The federal drug regulator has recently softened its position on flavored vapes, a move that caused the resignation of one commissioner and sparked worries about political meddling.
Some experts claim that flavored vapes help smokers quit, but the senator believes their appeal to youth and potential for addiction outweigh any benefits.
In a letter dated May 20, the senator warned that the new rules would primarily serve tobacco companies and described them as short‑sighted and corrupt.
The health department and the White House have not yet replied to requests for comment.
For the first time, the regulator has approved fruit‑flavored vapes and plans to let certain products hit shelves before full scientific review.
The senator cited evidence that tobacco firms have lobbied the former president and made large political donations to influence policy.
Other senators joined in urging the acting commissioner to reverse the approvals for flavored vapes.
