Vice President Kamala Harris took the spotlight on Thursday, becoming the first US official to publicly address the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. This move was deliberately timed to coincide with President Joe Biden's written statement, released just moments earlier. The synchronized approach shows a calculated strategy by the Biden administration to navigate the complexities of the Gaza conflict. Despite facing criticism for her handling of the war, Harris has chosen to align with Biden's strategy. The death of Sinwar does not simplify the political landscape, as evident from protests in Wisconsin supporting Palestine. Harris's next stop was Michigan, where she encountered further political tension. The Detroit metro area is home to many Arab- and Muslim-Americans who are displeased with the Biden administration's support of Israel and refusal to limit weapons. In Michigan, Harris met with Arab-American leaders who urged her to consider a different approach to the conflict. However, Harris focused her attention on the stalled ceasefire and hostage negotiations. She met with leaders and emphasized the need for Israel's security, the release of hostages, relief for Gaza, and Palestinian rights. President Biden, speaking from Berlin, echoed Harris's sentiments. He encouraged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to move forward from the war and plan for the future.
