Virginia Expands Animal Health Labs to Protect Food and Farmers

Virginia's state department officially broke ground on new expansions at regional animal health laboratories. The initiative targets three key cities: Harrisonburg, Lynchburg, and Warrenton. Officials say these upgrades will strengthen the ability to test for diseases and contaminants. Such improvements serve farmers, veterinarians, and everyday consumers alike.

The state already runs four regional animal health centers, with one additional facility in Wytheville. Each location provides specialized services like bacteriology, serology, virology, and molecular diagnostics. Together, these labs support veterinary clinics, food manufacturers, and agricultural producers. They also assist various state programs focused on animal welfare and safety.

Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Katie Frazier emphasized the importance of these changes during the ceremony. She noted that growing testing capacity acts as a shield for public health. Protecting the economy is equally crucial since Virginia's farming industry generates billions annually. Residents benefit directly when their milk, meat, cheese, ice cream, and drinking water undergo rigorous checks.
