Waukegan faced a snowy challenge this holiday season, but the city's spirit remained undeterred. With a forecast of up to 12 inches of snow, officials had to adapt the annual Christmas tree lighting event, known as Jingle on Genesee. The plan included a tree lighting, a market, a hot chocolate walk, and support for local businesses. The mayor made it clear that canceling the event was not an option. The focus shifted to keeping the tradition alive while dealing with the weather. By Sunday morning, 10 inches of snow had fallen, leading to some changes. The hot chocolate walk was canceled, but the rest of the activities moved indoors to the public library. The tree lighting went ahead as planned, with the mayor, Santa, and Mrs. Claus leading a group of over 80 people to Jack Benny Plaza. Despite the cold, the event brought the community together. Grace Contreras and her daughter Sophia were among the attendees. Sophia loved the colorful lights, and her mom appreciated the effort to make it happen. Inside the library, the Kris Kringle Market took place with local businesses showcasing their crafts. There were fewer vendors than usual, but the event was still a success. The library also offered free family photos with Santa, adding to the festive atmosphere. The Waukegan Chamber of Commerce usually serves hot chocolate and snacks outside, but this year, they moved indoors. Chamber President Mike Reid noted that the library was very festive, and the change worked well. The market featured a variety of items, including jewelry made by a young entrepreneur, Josies Ortiz. Her business, Josies Stay Fresh, sells lemonade and beaded jewelry. While the snow may have affected sales for some local businesses on Small Business Saturday, the city is planning another event before Christmas to support them. The holiday season in Waukegan shows how a community can come together, even in challenging weather.
