Massachusetts is gearing up for a rollercoaster of weather this weekend. Things are about to get wet and wild. Rain and strong winds are on the way, with a possible snowstorm looming early next week.
Saturday night is going to be chilly. Temperatures will drop to the low 20s. Sunday starts off dry, but warm air will bring rain by late morning. In western and central Massachusetts, there might be a brief mix of snow and rain between 10 a. m. and 1 p. m. before it turns into plain rain.
The heaviest rain is expected late Sunday afternoon through the evening. Up to a half-inch of rain could fall. Temperatures will jump into the 40s statewide, with coastal areas possibly reaching the low 50s.
Southern winds will pick up, blowing 15 to 25 mph and gusting up to 35 mph across Cape Cod and Southeast Massachusetts.
The bigger weather event is expected on Tuesday. A developing storm near the coast could bring the first significant snow of the season to inland Massachusetts, especially north and west of I-495.
People in these areas should stay alert. The exact line between rain and snow is still being figured out. After the storm passes, expect colder air for the rest of the week, with nighttime temperatures dropping into the teens.
Residents across the state should prepare for messy conditions on Sunday and keep an eye on the snow threat next week.
