A judge has given the okay for West Virginia National Guard troops to stay in Washington D. C. This decision came after a legal battle started by a local group. The group argued that the governor didn't have the right to send the troops there.
The governor's office said the deployment was legal under federal rules. The judge had to figure out if the governor's move was within the law. The group suing said they were hurt because they had to shift their focus from other important issues.
The president declared a crime emergency in D. C. This was the reason given for sending the troops. But, the Department of Justice said crime rates were actually pretty low. Still, over 2, 300 Guard members from different states were sent to help out.
The judge had two earlier hearings to listen to both sides. The group suing said they were harmed because they had to change their plans. The state said the group didn't have a good reason to sue.
