It's still too early to predict this year's Christmas snow, but historical data gives us some hints. AccuWeather looked at weather patterns from 1991 to 2020 and found that big cities like Denver and Chicago have the best chances, about 1 in 3, for a white Christmas. Indianapolis and Boston come next with about 1 in 4 odds.
When you move north or to higher elevations, the chances get better. States in the far north and mountainous areas in the West have the highest probabilities. Weather experts are also watching a climate pattern called La Niña. A weaker version is expected this year, which might bring more snow to the north-central U. S. and less to the Pacific Northwest compared to stronger La Niña years.
More details will be available in mid-December from AccuWeather. The National Weather Service provides updates every 6 to 10 days.
