What makes people keep coming back to OTT video apps?
Mon Jun 01 2026
Streaming services have taken over how people watch shows and movies. But why do users stick with one platform over another? A recent study looked at four key parts of the user experience: how smooth the service runs, how users interact with it, how it makes them feel, and the overall quality of support.
Researchers surveyed 230 people and found that an app that loads quickly and rarely glitches has the biggest impact on whether someone sees real value in it, is happy with it, and plans to keep using it. Features like being able to comment while watching or share easily also push people toward using the app more often, though they don’t necessarily make users happier or see more value in it.
What really makes people happy is when the content connects with their emotions — like feeling excited, nostalgic, or moved. Higher emotional engagement leads to more perceived value, greater satisfaction, and higher chances of continued use. Loyalty grows when users actually enjoy what they watch and how it makes them feel.
Unexpectedly, getting good customer service or fast fixes doesn’t directly make people use an app more, though it still matters. It mostly works behind the scenes by improving how users rate the app and whether they’re satisfied — which then makes them more likely to return.
What stands out is that satisfaction is the real driver of whether someone keeps using an app. Even if a service is fast and high-quality, unless it makes users happy, they probably won’t stay long. So for streaming companies, smooth performance and emotionally engaging shows aren’t just nice to have — they’re essential.
