As the tech world continues to dive deeper into the realm of artificial intelligence, Meta has just taken the plunge with a suite of new AI features that aim to make your social media feeds look and feel like a never-ending stream of creativity. In theory, it sounds great - who wouldn't want to edit their photos, chat with AIs, and even generate captions and prompts for their stories on Facebook and Instagram? But let's not forget the elephant in the room: what's the real cost of this kind of technology?
Meta's AI can now process image inputs, allowing it to answer questions about photos, edit them, and even suggest captions for your stories. This means you can re-share a goat-themed post as a goat on a surfboard (weird but fun, right? ) or ask Meta AI to tell you what kind of flower you took a picture of. But there's a catch - the more we rely on AI-generated content, the more our energy consumption is going to skyrocket. Can you imagine if each AI-generated image was equivalent to fully charging your phone? Yikes.
On top of that, the new feature allows Meta to inject unsolicited AI-generated images into your feeds. While it's nice to have new content to explore, it's all just a bit too convenient for my taste. And what about the potential for misuse? Imagine a world where spammers and scammers can use Meta's AI to create fake content that looks like the real deal. Not good. Not good at all.
But I digress. Meta is also testing a new feature that lets you talk to Meta AI and have it respond in celebrity voices. Yep, you can ask Awkwafina or Dame Judi Dench to help you with your queries. It's certainly a novelty, but I'm not sure how long this kind of "fun" will last before we start to crave more substance.
The company is also working on a deepfake feature that can translate video content from Spanish to English or vice versa. This is certainly a useful tool, especially for businesses that have global customer bases. But again, there's the elephant in the room - what's the cost of this kind of technology? And what about the potential for misuse?
Meta did not mention anything about getting creators' consent before manipulating their images and voices. Yikes.
At the end of the day, it's all about balance. We want technology to make our lives easier, but we also need to make sure we're not sacrificing our sanity for the sake of convenience. Here's hoping Meta will take the feedback from its users to heart and make some changes to its AI features.
