When COVID-19 Shut Down Senior Workouts, Walking Became the Answer

For many older adults, the COVID-19 pandemic meant losing access to organized exercise programs. Researchers wanted to understand what happened to their physical abilities when these programs stopped. A team in Brazil decided to investigate this question. They focused on 42 community-dwelling seniors who had been part of a regular exercise routine before the pandemic hit. Most participants were women, and their average age was around 74 years old. The exercise program had been suspended for a full 18 months, giving researchers a chance to see how the break affected their bodies.

The scientists used a small device called the activPAL3 micro accelerometer to track two things. First, they measured how much time each person spent being sedentary. Second, they counted the number of steps each participant took every day. To gauge physical performance, the researchers used three standard tests. They counted how many times someone could rise from a chair in 30 seconds. They measured grip strength using a hand dynamometer. They also timed how quickly participants could stand up, walk a short distance, and sit back down. These tests gave a clear picture of leg strength, overall power, and mobility.

The results revealed something interesting about walking. Seniors who took more steps every day performed better on all the physical tests. When researchers crunched the numbers, they found that adding 1,000 steps to a daily routine brought real improvements. Leg strength went up by roughly one-third of a repetition. Handgrip power increased by nearly 0.9 kilograms-force. Walking speed and stability also got better, with the Timed Up and Go test improving by about 0.3 seconds. Those who managed around 9,325 steps daily showed the strongest performance overall.

Surprisingly, sedentary time did not show a meaningful link to physical performance. Just sitting less did not automatically translate to better strength or mobility. The real factor was movement itself. The study suggests that when gym classes or supervised programs become unavailable, simply walking more could help older adults maintain their physical abilities. Encouraging daily step targets might be a practical way to support aging populations during future disruptions to structured exercise routines.
