In the early days of Star Trek: Discovery, Starfleet ships used a nifty tech called holographic communicators. These communicators let ships talk to each other with colorful, floating holograms. But in the thirty-second century, these communicators vanish from the show. So, what happened?
It turns out, Captain Chris Pike from the USS Enterprise had something to do with it. Early in season 2, the Enterprise had tech problems caused by these holographic communicators. Pike decided to ditch them and go back to old-fashioned viewscreens. "No more holograms from now on, " he said. And just like that, this tech disappeared from Starfleet for a century.
But why did Captain Pike's call hold so much weight? Starfleet leaders respected Pike, even before he got his big promotions. If the Enterprise didn't use holographic communicators, neither would the rest of Starfleet. However, holograms didn't go away completely. By the time of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, they brought back holographic communicators with no issues.
Even though holographic communicators came back, Captain Pike's decision showed his power in Starfleet. He was a leader who influenced others with his choices. And even after his accident, Pike's legacy lived on in Starfleet.
