This year, students can start applying for federal student aid earlier than usual. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now open to all students for the 2025-26 academic year. This is thanks to a "phased rollout" that began in October and has just expanded to include everyone. The form was previously only available to certain groups for beta testing. By November 22, the form will be out of testing and fully available. Since Monday, over 50, 000 students have already submitted their forms. This is a change from last year, when the simpler form was delayed until late December. Students who apply before November 22 won't need to submit another 2025-26 FAFSA form. However, there are still some issues with the new form, similar to last year's problems. But don't worry, there are workarounds for these problems, according to higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz. He said this year's rollout is "much better than last year. " Filing early for student aid can make a big difference. Last year, complications with the form led to fewer students applying and ultimately, fewer students going to college. So, it's important to get your application in early.
