Why parents give kids phones and why it might backfire
Wed Jun 17 2026
Phones in classrooms never help learning. That’s the simple truth. Some argue phones don’t belong near students at all. Others warn that as kids grow, their screen time only increases. Social media becomes their main way to connect, but ironically, it makes real friendships harder to keep.
Studies now link heavy social media use to rising mental health issues. Depression, anxiety, and shorter attention spans are popping up more often among young users. Behavior changes too—more aggression, more restlessness, harder to focus in school. Some experts say social media is partly to blame for the current youth mental health crisis.
Another concern? Kids sitting still too much. Less outdoor play and more phone scrolling play a role in rising obesity rates. Nearly a quarter of children now face weight problems, partly because they’re glued to screens instead of moving around. Without regular activity, their bodies and minds suffer long-term.
