Why Prescribing Food Could Change Healthcare

United StatesThu Sep 03 2026

Not eating well causes real damage to people’s health. Doctors have not had great ways to fix that problem. Now, a new idea is growing. It is called "Food is Medicine," or FIM for short. These programs try to stop sickness or help manage it by giving people healthy food. They also work on the reasons why eating right feels so hard.

FIM comes in different forms. Some programs hand out produce or groceries. Others give meal kits or already cooked meals. Some pair food with lessons about nutrition. The main goal stays the same across all types. They want to remove the gap between knowing what to eat and actually getting it.

Studies on FIM show some good news. Many participants see better blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol numbers. Some use the hospital or emergency room less often. These are real wins. But the research is not perfect. Some studies did not show big changes. Others showed mixed results that surprised the researchers.

Big groups are trying FIM at a large scale. Medicaid programs in several states are testing it out. Early findings look hopeful, but questions remain. Why does it work better in some places than others? Who benefits the most? Researchers are still digging for clear answers.

Going forward, the field needs sharper study designs and honest reporting. Food alone cannot solve every health problem. But when paired with good medical care, it looks like a tool worth keeping on the shelf. The next step is learning how to use it wisely.
