If you're thinking about buying a new graphics card this holiday season, hold on! New and improved GPUs are just around the corner, and it might be worth waiting. Here's why.
In January 2025, big names like Nvidia and AMD are expected to announce their next-gen GPUs at CES in Las Vegas. These new cards could offer better performance and value for your money. While current GPUs might be tempting, especially with holiday discounts, buying now could leave you disappointed when the new models arrive.
Both Nvidia and AMD are gearing up to launch their latest products. Nvidia's RTX 50 series and AMD's RDNA 4 GPUs could bring significant improvements. Even Intel is joining the race with their Arc Battlemage products.
To decide if buying now is worth it, consider the discount. A minimum of 25% off is a good start, but even then, it might not be enough. If the new GPUs promise big performance gains, you might want to wait for an even better deal.
For example, if a new RTX 5070 offers RTX 4070 Ti-level performance for the same price, you'd want to see the RTX 4070 Ti Super at no more than $600. That's a 25% discount from its original price.
But what if you can't wait? If you need a high-end GPU now, the RTX 4080 Super is a solid choice for 4K gaming. It's faster and cheaper than the RTX 4090. For mid-range, the RTX 4070 Super and Radeon RX 7900 XT are good picks, depending on whether you value ray tracing or not.
If you're on a tight budget, consider the Radeon RX 6600. It's faster than Nvidia's options in the same price range.
So, before you make a purchase, think about what you really need. If you can wait, the new GPUs might be just around the corner.
