We're at a crossroads – a perfect storm of wars, inequality, climate change, and technological advancements has left humanity in turmoil. But, instead of giving up, it's time for us to take collective responsibility to shape a better future. The United Nations' Summit of the Future, happening this month, is our chance to come together and tackle the pressing issues of our time. But, let's not forget the mistakes of the past and avoid complacency. What if we don't act now? The consequences of inaction are catastrophic, leaving people angrier, more disillusioned, and divided. We're already facing unprecedented challenges, and it's crucial we address these threats head-on. The UN's General Assembly, in the 1940s, adopted the Genocide and Geneva Conventions, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, laying the groundwork for a safer future. Now, it's time to build on that foundation. The draft Pact, which will be endorsed at the Summit, raises red flags. It fails to address the conflict-ridden regions of Gaza, Myanmar, Sudan, and Ukraine, and shows a lack of commitment to strengthening international justice and the UN Security Council. While it includes some positive elements, such as expanding Security Council membership and promoting sustainable development, it's clear that more needs to be done. The Pact's lack of a bold vision and ineffective solutions is a slap in the face to those fighting for human rights and climate justice. We can't just rehash existing agreements and expect different results. Real change requires bold action, and the UN must lead by example. The problem is not just the UN's inability to deliver; it's also the intentional barriers it has created to silence civil society organizations. If the UN continues to ignore the voices of those pushing for real change, it will squander this opportunity. But, there is hope. Amnesty International has established a 2048 Commission to design a global governance system rooted in human rights. This Commission will work towards a system that upholds universal human rights and ensures they are protected in the face of rapid and unpredictable change. As the Summit of the Future unfolds, it's crucial that member states remember their pledge to be accountable to "the peoples of the world" and start building a sustainable, human rights-based future.
