You know those super-cheap Ikea prices that make us all happy? Well, they might not stay that way. The boss of the company that runs most Ikea stores says tariffs, like the ones Donald Trump wants to put on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China, make it tough to keep prices low. He's worried these tariffs could end up costing customers more.
Most of Ikea's stuff is made in Europe, but about 30% comes from Asia, mainly China. Trump says he'll add a 10% tax on Chinese goods until China stops drugs from coming into the US. Ikea's boss didn't say if they'll move production because of this, but he did say they stick with suppliers for a long time.
Last year, Ikea cut prices on 2, 000 products to help people dealing with inflation. They ended up making less money, even though they sold more stuff. Now, with these tariffs, it might be harder for them to keep prices low.
Ikea's opening a temporary store on London's Oxford Street this week and a permanent one next year. They hope to attract customers who don't want to travel to their bigger stores outside the city.
