The BAFTA Awards have dropped their longlists for the year, and two films are topping the chart. Jacques Audiard's crime thriller "Emilia Perez" and Edward Berger's papal drama "Conclave" are the front-runners, with "Emilia Perez" grabbing 15 nods and "Conclave" following close behind with 14. Both films are up for major categories like Best Film and Best Director.
This year's nominations highlight a mix of stellar performances and impressive technical work. Several actors, including Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci from "Conclave, " and Karla Sofía Gascón from "Emilia Perez, " are contenders for leading and supporting roles. Additionally, surprise appearances from Dev Patel for his role in "Monkey Man" and Ellen Kuras for directing "Lee" have sparked interest.
The BAFTAs also recognize exceptional work behind the camera. Films like "Dune: Part Two" and "Gladiator II" are strong contenders in technical categories such as cinematography and editing. Notably, Denzel Washington is up for Best Supporting Actor in "Gladiator II, " marking his first BAFTA nomination despite being a two-time Oscar winner.
However, not all expected nominees made the cut. "Nickel Boys" only managed one longlist appearance for Adapted Screenplay, and Luca Guadagnino's "Challengers" appeared in just two categories. On the other hand, Payal Kapadia's debut film "All We Imagine As Light" has impressively appeared in multiple categories, including Best Director and Original Screenplay.
The next phase of voting is slated for January 3-10, with the final voting period running from January 22 to February 11, 2024. The BAFTA Film Awards ceremony will take place on February 16, 2025.
